Analys av haptoglobin i bovint serum med surface plasmon
SPR is a phenomenon that can exist at the interface between a metal and a dielectric material such as air or water. A surface plasmon (commonly excited by optical radiation) of the electrons at the surface of the metal results in an associated surface bound and evanescent electromagnetic wave of optical frequency. The formation of self-organized laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) in metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics upon pulsed laser irradiation is a well-known phenomenon, receiving increased attention because of their huge technological potential. For the case of metals, a major role in this process is played by surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating at the interface of the Surface Plasmon Resonance and Nanoparticles . Nanoparticles are of interest to the scientific community for a multitude of reasons including their large surface area to volume ratio which makes them very reactive to external stimuli quickly, the fact that they operate on a quantum mechanics scale, and because the nanoscale is the level at which many biological processes occur. Surface plasmon-based circuits have been proposed as a means of overcoming the size limitations of photonic circuits for use in high performance data processing nano devices. [10] The ability to dynamically control the plasmonic properties of materials in these nano-devices is key to their development.

Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) is an optical technique used to measure molecular interactions in real time. SPR can occur when plane-polarized light hits a metal film under total internal reflection conditions. SPR signal is directly dependent on the refractive index of the medium on the sensor chip.
